Top Tips for Finding a Trustworthy Real Estate Agent

Posted by admin in Agency Blog

Your real estate investments are arguably the most important investments of your life – both financially and personally. You are not just looking for a strong long-term financial return, your real estate investments should reflect your lifestyle choices. So it is essential that you find a trustworthy real estate agent who can help you navigate the market and make the best decisions based on your vision.

So how do you find a trustworthy real estate agent?

Do they have proven experience?
Sadly, most Australian real estate agents no longer need extensive training to become qualified in their field. In NSW and Victoria, it can take as little as a week to obtain a certificate of registration. This is hardly adequate time to learn how to maintain professional standards in relation to privacy, ethics and legal issues. Don’t just ask your real estate agent about their qualifications – ask how long they studied, and how long they have been in the real estate business. Google their name to check their background. Ask for recommendations – a true professional will have a good reputation with former clients happy to recommend them. Experience is essential if you want a smooth sale with no financial or legal obstacles along the way.

Do they respect confidentiality?
It might seem like a coup for you if your real estate agent says: “I happen to know the sellers are going through a divorce, so you can really push for a lower price. They are really keen to sell.” But an agent who passes on confidential information is violating the industry’s ethical code and also undermining your trust in the process – if they will tell you confidential information about the seller, they are just as likely to pass back confidential information about you. The agent is actually manipulating both buyer and seller in order to close the deal.

Do they maintain communication?
Your real estate agent should demonstrate their interest in your business by keeping in regular contact with you at all times, regardless of where you are in the selling/ buying process. A good real estate agent will respond promptly to your emails and phone messages and will have comprehensive and satisfactory answers to your questions.

Professional presentation
A real estate agent who is neatly dressed, well organised and punctual is more likely to have a handle on the essential yet invisible details of your next property deal. A good real estate agent will also be innovative and proactive, offering you valuable advice about where to look for your next property or how to stage your current property for a good sale.

Conversely, a real estate agent who is running late, forgets to bring along business cards and cannot give full and consistent answers to your questions, probably does not have the organisational skills and attention to detail to oversee the sale or purchase of a property.
